Description
This Restorative Justice Council approved course is an intensive and comprehensive immersion in restorative ethos, principles, and practice skills, and the opportunities for application in healthcare settings. This course is unique in considering the necessary application of restorative principles and practice to internal relationships and those with patients, families and the wider community. The course incorporates tuition in enhanced practitioner skills using a unique method of engagement, enabling greater inclusion of parties within the process.
This course is delivered by trainers who are pioneering Restorative Practice within Healthcare and Restorative Responses to Harm Events in the UK. The trainers bring a wealth of knowledge and understanding of safe and dignifying restorative practice and the specific considerations for application in response to various sources of relational harm in healthcare. These focused areas include inter staff conflict, unintended patient harm events, and local community impacts of public processes.
Participant learning takes place through activities, reflection and discussion, and skills practise. The key skills for safe practice and the strategies for effective implementation and culture change within healthcare are examined. Prior knowledge of restorative ethos, principles and practice is not a pre-requisite for undertaking this course.
Learning Outcomes.
Participants will be equipped to;
- Be Restorative Champions within their organisation, and a key asset in enabling an authentic Restorative and Just Culture.
- Bring a restorative view / lens to the work they do and their sphere of influence.
- Model a Restorative approach internally and with patients and the wider community
- Support development of a Restorative Culture within their own teams, how they work with others.
- Implement (and exceed) the expectations for Staff and Patient and Family engagement, involvement and support following safety incidents in the PSIRF.
- Support policy and process development that enables Restorative Just Culture and Compassionate Engagement and Involvement to be authentically realised both proactively and reactively
- Use Restorative Enquiry and facilitation skills at work and at home to support healthy relationships and collaborative decision making
- Recognise where a Restorative Process could be used to support wellbeing, trust and just relations, in internal relationships, with patients and families, or in wider community engagement work and facilitate or cofacilitate this process through design to delivery and evaluation.
- Recognise where restorative forums for dialogue can be used to support optimal learning and improvement initiatives
- Help reduce time and money spent on, and distress caused by processes such as complaints and grievance processes, tribunals, litigation.
- Form a Community of Practice within their organisation and support each other as they implement their learning, and engage with us for support to help establish this successfully
- Work within the limits of their experience, by cofacilitating complex/serious cases where necessary as experience is developed.
- Use this accredited course as part of their application to the Restorative Justice Council for registration as a practitioner.

Format
Delivered in person, preferably over four consecutive days, but ‘2 and 2’ is also possible.
